Coming off a series win against Atlanta, he Marietta Patriots face the Alpharetta Aviators in a crucial home-and-home series to help keep their playoff hopes alive. The Patriots currently trail the Atlanta by two games for the fourth and final playoff spot.
To win the series against Atlanta, the Patriots rallied from a 7-3 deficit in the seventh and a 7-5 deficit in the ninth. In the ninth, with two on, the Pats scored three runs consecutive singles by Nick Tiano and Collin Teegarden coupled with an error to take an 8-7 lead. Matthew Vaccaro then added an insurance run with an RBI single to make it 9-7.
Matthew Vaccaro went 4-for-4 in the Patriots 9-7 victory Friday night over Atlanta.
Vaccaro currently leads the Patriots with a .447 batting average. If the season ended today, the first baseman from Reinhardt University would shatter the previous single-season record of .370 set by Nate Lowe in the 2014 season.
Livingston Morris hit his team-leading fourth home run of the season Friday night and is tied for second in the Sunbelt in that category. The right fielder from Georgia Gwinnett blasted two home runs in the second game of a doubleheader July 2 against the Norcross Astros, becoming the fourth player in team history to accomplish this feat.
The Patriots took the opening series against Alpharetta in June, winning the first two games at Legion Field 4-3 and 3-2 in extra innings before falling 5-0 at Marietta High School July 1.
The Pats will be without Greg Collins, Alex Watkins and Nate Dupree, who were each named to the 2019 Sunbelt Prospect Showcase team that will participate in the Southeast Collegiate Prospect Showcase July 15-16.
Greg Collins made his first start of the season July 8 against the Astros and pitched a team-high seven innings, but was hit with the tough-luck loss after allowing two runs on four hits with four strikeouts.
Alex Watkins made his 24th career appearance with the Patriots against Norcross (June 15) to become the team's all-time leader in that category. The right-handed pitcher from Reinhardt University is also the Patriots career leader in saves, recording his seventh in the Pats 3-2 victory over Atlanta.
The Patriots 13-3 victory on June 11 over the Gwinnett Tides tied a team record for largest margin of victory (10) and is the first time the Pats have won via run-rule since 2017.
Walker Hennon hit the Sunbelt League’s first home run of the season on June 10 against the Norcross Astros.
Ryan Whitener (1-1) picked up his first victory in relief (June 11) against the Gwinnett Tides, and then recorded his first save (June 19) against the Atlanta Crackers
The Patriots look to return to the Sunbelt Championship for a third straight season after two consecutive appearances in 2017 and 2018. The Pats dethroned the Atlanta Crackers in 2017 to capture their first Sunbelt title, but fell short against the Brookhaven Bucks in 2018.
Coach Gil Navarro returns for his sixth season as the head coach of the Marietta Patriots, a position he has held since their first season in 2014. Under his guidance, the Pats have reached the playoffs in all but one season.
SERIES VS. ALPHARETTA
Monday's game will be the 25th all-time meeting between the Marietta and Alpharetta. The Patriots lead the all-time series 18-6, and is 6-3 since Alpharetta re-branded as the Aviators in 2018.
