Suwanee, Ga. – The Marietta Patriots dropped a seven inning game to the Norcross Astros 6-2 Friday night at Peachtree Ridge High School.
With the loss, Marietta fell to 9-12 on the season while Norcross improved to 13-7. The game was delayed 2 hours and 45 minutes due to rain and was shortened to seven innings after starting at 9:47 p.m.
With the game scoreless, Nate Stinson singled and Brandon Grover walked to lead off the fourth inning. A wild pitch moved both to second and third before Gabe Howell hit a sacrifice fly deep into right field that scored Stinson and put the Pats up 1-0.
The Astros responded in the bottom of the fourth with two runs on an RBI single by Sam Frietas to take a 2-1 lead. Norcross then added to their lead again in the fifth as Nick Wilhite singled to the shortstop. A wild pitch and a pass ball moved Wilhite to third, Josh Johnston walked, setting the stage for a successful double steal that put another run across the plate.
Trailing 3-1 in the sixth Marietta loaded the bases on three consecutive two out singles by Brandon Grover, Livingston Morris, and Gabe Howell. Trevor Austin then delivered an RBI single into center field that scored Grover and cut the deficit to 3-2. Morris tried to tie the game on the same play but was gunned out at the plate.
The Astros added three more runs on three hits and two errors to make it 6-2 in the sixth.
Jared Staples (3-0) pitched the final 3.1 innings for Norcross to pick up his third victory of the season. The right-hander from Kennesaw State allowed just one run on five hits with two strikeouts. Will Griffin (1-1) struck out eight but allowed three runs on seven hits with two walks in 5 innings to pick up his first loss of the season.
Marietta travels to Georgia Gwinnett College to face the Gwinnett Tides on Saturday, July 14th at 12 p.m.
