Lawrenceville, Ga. - Gabe Howell went 2-for-3 and Devin Billardello drove in the Pats only run as they fell 2-1 to the Gwinnett Tides (3-3) at Georgia Gwinnett College.
The Patriots fell to 3-2 on the year after stranding eleven on base and hurting themselves with four errors, including one that led to the game-deciding run.
Will Griffin led the way for the Patriots in his first start on the mound this season, allowing just one hit in four innings of work while striking out four. He did not, however, factor into the decision.
The Pats struck first as Gabe Howell hit a single and advanced to third on a throwing error by the Tide pitcher. Devin Billardello then singled, scoring Howell and giving Marietta a 2-1 lead.
The Tides answered in the sixth as Lavoisier Fisher hit a triple and scored on a double by Willie Carter, tying the game 1-1.
The score remained that way until the eighth inning when Keven Jimenez got things going for the Tide with a first-pitch single off of Corey Linz (0-2). A Michael Branigan single and subsequent error then scored Jimenez as Nate Stinson misplayed Branigan's hit into left field, giving the Tides a 2-1 lead.
Marietta mounted a rally, putting runners on first and second in the ninth, but couldn't bring the tying run home as Seth Clark retired the final batter to earn his first save of the season.
Marietta plays again on Tuesday when they play the Norcross Astros at Peachtree Ridge High School. First pitch is at 7 p.m.
