Brookhaven, Ga. - The Marietta Patriots hit three home runs, including a go-ahead solo shot by Matthew Vaccaro to win 5-4 over the Brookhaven Bucks at Oglethorpe University Saturday evening.
With the victory, the Patriots (5-3) moved into second place in the Sun Belt standings, while Brookhaven (5-4) fell to third after entering the day tied for first with the Norcross Astros.
After Brookhaven had tied the game 4-4 with runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh, Connor Stutts (0-1) came on to pitch for the Bucks, facing Vaccaro in the top of the ninth inning. Vaccaro then smacked Stutts 0-1 pitch just over the left field wall for his first home run of the season, giving Marietta a 5-4 lead they would not relinquish. He would finish the day going 2-for-3 at the plate, while Joe Stucky went 2-for-4, including a solo home run in the second inning.
The Patriots took an early lead on a bases loaded sacrifice fly by Stephen Cullen in the first inning to go up 1-0. Joe Stucky then made it 2-0 after blasted his homer over the right field wall in the second..
After Brookhaven scored a run to make it 2-1 in the third, Marietta responded with two runs in the fifth as Trey Vanderpool singled and Brandon Grover hit a two-run homer over the right field wall, giving the Pats a 4-1 lead. Vanderpool finished the game with three hits in four at-bats for the Pats.
Billy Brand (1-0) retired all six batters he faced in the eighth and ninth innings to pick up his first win of the season.
Both teams face each other again on Monday, June 25th, at Marietta High School. First pitch is at 7 p.m.
