BROOKHAVEN -- The Marietta Patriots (9-16) scored three runs in the ninth and brought the tying run to the plate but fell 11-8 to the Brookhaven Bucks (13-8) Friday night at Oglethorpe University.
Blake Metcalfe went 2-for-4 with a walk and homered in his second straight game. The rising sophomore from South Georgia State is batting .500 in his first four games with the Patriots.
Both sides traded blows through the first four innings. The Pats struck first in the second inning, capitalizing on two errors on a dropped third strike to take a 2-0 lead. The Bucks responded with two runs in the home half on CJ Edmond's two-run homer to deep right field. The Patriots then re-took the lead on Metcalfe's solo homer in the third before Brookhaven tied the game again on a pass ball in the home half.
The Patriots re-took the lead again on a wild pitch in the fourth that allowed Adam Alicea to score from third. But Brookhaven responded with two runs on RBI doubles by Edmond and Chandler Simpson to take a 5-4 lead.
Facing a 6-4 deficit, Mickey Skole reached second on a fielder's choice error by the second baseman and then scored on Anthony Angelety's RBI single into left field to pull the Pats within 6-5. But Brookhaven added another run in the home half and then scored four more runs on three hits in the eighth to take control of the game.
Facing an 11-5 deficit the Patriots rallied with three runs in the ninth, capitalizing on five walks by Narada Monge, making his debut with the Bucks, to cut the deficit to 11-8. Jordan Ward then came on to pitch for Brookhaven and recorded the final out to earn his first save of the season.
The series continues Saturday at Marietta High School. First pitch is at 12 p.m.
