MARIETTA - The Marietta Patriots (4-8) rallied from a 5-1 deficit to bring the tying run to the plate but fell 5-4 to the Brookhaven Bucks (5-4) Wednesday night at Marietta High School.
M.J. Sasapan went 3-for-4 with one RBI to lead Marietta at the plate, and Harrison Osborn pitched five scoreless innings of relief to keep the Pats close.
Trailing 5-1, the Pats mounted their rally with a run in the fifth, seventh, and eighth. In the fifth inning, Nick Loffredo singled, advanced third on a single by M.J. Sasapan and scored on an errant throw by the third baseman during the same play to cut the deficit to 5-2.
In the seventh, Palmer Sapp reached second on an error in right field, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on Sasapan's third single of the night to make it 5-3.
Khalil Wilson singled to lead off the eighth. Wilson then drew an errant throw by the catcher on a stolen base attempt which allowed him to reach third before Collin Teegarden drove him home on a sacrifice fly to make it 5-4. But the rally ended there as Noah Cole retired the side in the ninth to earn his first save of the season.
Brookhaven jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead on three hits in the first inning, including a three-run home run by Jack Layrisson. The Pats cut the deficit to 4-1 on an RBI double by Adam Alicea in the third, but Brookhaven answered with a solo home run by Devonte Brown in the fourth to make it 5-1.
Ryan Suppa (1-1) took the loss after allowing five runs on four hits in four innings.
Jake Brace (3-0) pitched seven innings to earn the victory for the Bucks.
